Over one-half of Washington's topography possesses a "western look" with
deep canyons, sage brush, wide-horizoned deserts and rangelands relatively
undiscovered by filmmakers. Here are some examples:
The Columbia Gorge

Located in southwestern Washington, from Washougal to past Goldendale.
This is a spectacular area.
The Columbia River

The spectacular Columbia River "rolls on" from the Washington/Canadian
border to the Grand Coulee Dam. It continues south to carve out the
majestic 27-mile Columbia River Canyon. The river then curves west to
complete its journey to the Pacific Ocean and forming the Washington/Oregon
border. Blacktop road and railroad follow the river much of the way. High
basalt cliffs are on each side of the canyon. The valley between the
cliffs is approximately 3 miles wide. Scenes along canyon vary from sage
brush and desolate areas to farmlands and cattle grazing regions.
Channeled Scablands

Located near Moses Lake, these bizarre, carved geological formations span
several miles. Water pockets seen from air are known as the Potholes;
access by dirt and gravel roads.
Deep Gorge

This narrow, steep-walled, mossy-rocked "high bridge" over
a raging river is located at the end of Stehekin Road in Chelan County.
Access by boat or air only.
Dry Falls

It was once a 417 ft. waterfall, 3 miles wide, 40-50 times
larger than Niagara. Today, it is a dry barren landscape of dramatic mystery.
Grand Ronde Canyon

Located in southeastern Washington. This is a spectacular canyon,
but remote. Access by state highway.
Green River Gorge

Located 20 miles east of Seattle, near the town of Black Diamond. This
is a deep, lush gorge containing the Green River.
Klickitat Canyon

Located between Goldendale and Glenwood. It is quite dramatic and
accessible. The road follows the river at the bottom of canyon; the
railroad goes through a portion of the canyon; and the road goes along
the rim portion of the canyon.
Skagit Gorge

Located on the Skagit River near the community of Newhalem. It is
scenic, but accessible only by trail. The Skagit River rushes through
huge boulders. The highway borders the gorge.
Tumwater Canyon

Located west of Leavenworth. The Wenatchee River winds through this
canyon. It is one of the most scenic spots in the state with its high
rock walls, rushing waters, and great colors in the Fall. The highway
borders the river.
Yakima River Canyon

Located between Ellensburg and Yakima. The Yakima River, bordered by
the highway, wanders through this canyon. Because of limited traffic
on this road, this is a good area for filming driving scenes.
