Washington State is rich in Native American Indian culture with 28 Federally recognized, and 8 non-Federally recognized Indian
tribes having reservations here. The largest is the Yakima Indian Nation
with 1.1 million acres of land in eastern Washington and 6,451 members.
The most typical of the Indian villages in Washington are Taholah and La
Push on the Pacific Coast, and Nespelem and Inchelium in the central
portion of the state.
Lummi Indians near Bellingham have an extensive aquaculture project for
raising salmon, steelhead, oyster seeds, etc. An all-Indian wild horse
rodeo is held annually in Inchelium and a "suicide race" in Omak.
Indian dances, ceremonies, and salmon bake are conducted for the public
on Blake Island in Puget Sound near Seattle.
