McNeil Island Corrections Center

Located on an island south of Tacoma. It has an impressive walled front with gates, large wired fences, gun towers, and three and five-tier cells. Access is by launch or small ferry from Steilacoom. Formerly a federal prison, it is now operated by the state.

Washington Corrections Center

Located in Shelton, 2 hours south of Seattle. It is a modern facility ringed with steel fences and surrounded by forests.

Washington State Penitentiary

Located in Walla Walla. First established in 1886, this is the oldest penitentiary in the state and handles maximum security offenders. It has brick walls, gun towers, and two and three-tier cell-blocks.

Washington State Reformatory

Located in Monroe, 35 minutes northeast of Seattle. First built in 1910, this formidable structure, situated on a hill above the town, has gray walls, gun towers, and four-tier cell-blocks. This is a medium security prison.

Other Facilities Include:

Echo Glen

Located east of Seattle. This is a modern juvenile detention center on beautifully landscaped and maintained grounds. It has cottages and several main buildings.

Old juvenile detention facility

Located in Chehalis, south of Olympia.

Twin Rivers Corrections

Located 35 minutes from Seattle. It is a modern facility on the grounds of the Washington State Reformatory at Monroe.

Washington Corrections Center For Women

Located in Purdy, west of Tacoma.
